HID Kit Dip / Full Mod

This mod will solve your problem if you have fitted a HID kit and are having difficulty getting your low & high beams to switch.

The Supra is fitted with 2 headlight systems - both differ slightly from each other.

Positive based system - “dimmer relay” fitted - UKDM

This system incorporates a “dimmer relay” in the engine bay fuse box which is controlled by the column hi/low switch.  With this system fitted the headlight bulbs are supplied with a common earth and +12V is switched via the “dimmer relay” to either the high or low beam filaments of the lamps. HID kits will work directly with this system!

Negative based system - NO “dimmer relay” fitted - JDM / various

This system seems to be used on a mixture of models such as JDM and some USDM etc.  It can be identified by the lack of a “dimmer relay” being fitted into the engine bay fuse box & your Hi beam dash light won’t work if the headlight bulbs are removed.

This system sends a switched +12v to the common pin of both head light lamps then the column hi/low switch  sends a grounding signal directly to either the high or low beam filaments of the lamps.

The panel Hi beam indicator then lights as a result of current bleeding back through the low beam filaments of the headlights.

This system will not always work directly with HID kits.

This is because when you remove the lamps the pull up/down ability of the circuit is removed and the relay in the HID kits does not pass enough current to provide the feedback current flow to the panel lamp - this means as far as the HID hi/low relay box is concerned the circuit never changes from a grounded state - locking it into one state - often this being hi beam.

The solution is pretty simple - add a relay into the circuit as per one of the diagrams below:

The first diagram is for HID kits that can accept Negative OR positive systems.

The second diagram is for HID kits that will ONLY accept POSITIVE going signals.

This can obviously be fitted to either side of the car at the headlights - just swap the red + wire over accordingly.

The following diagram is to change the negative switching system over to positive switching completely for HID kits that will ONLY accept POSITIVE trigger inputs.
